His most famous series Bahay na Bato is a heavily-detailed depiction of ancestral homes built during the Spanish and American occupation of the Philippines, a hotbed of nostalgia and fleeting memory.

However, Severino’s landscapes portray that same nostalgic feeling. Davao Scene: Samal is a depiction of the tranquil shores and evidence of Severino’s fascination with memory and ephemerality. He douses the scene in cool greens and calming blues, a trait that accompanied his early-morning on-site painting before the warm Philippine sun turns everything it touches golden. The meditative ambiance captures the sea’s ethereal beauty with the shadow cast over it calming the tides down. Through this work, Severino has masterfully created an ode to the ocean – a natural phenomenon that surrounds the country on every side – and turned it into a quiet, calm scene.
