This series brought about a change in his style as he veered towards textured abstraction, modern landscapes, and shades of subtle blues, browns, and grays

These pieces, dated 1998, are reminiscent of and a deviation from his rock abstractions. Mimicking a flat-lay perspective, he arranges an assortment of knickknacks up front, ranging from stones to pebbles to shells. In a way, it is a variant of the rock formations he did a decade ago but with a new twist.

“Raul is very good in building textures and colors,” his wife Adoracion “Baby” Tayag Piedra said in an interview with Christiane L. de la Paz in 2016. It is evident in these works, where even the flattest of colors create the effect of depth. “[He is a] master builder of colors,” she continues. Indeed, even through the simplest and subtlest of palettes, Piedra’s knowledge of colors shines through.
