A member of the Manong Generation, he was among the first Filipinos who migrated to the US in the early 1900s. He arrived by ship at Stockton, California at the age of eighteen to work as a farmhand during the Great Depression. As he began his art career in a foreign land, his heart remained in the Philippines with writer Eileen Tabios describing him as \"one of the geniuses in Filipino and American art history-- a master painter and colorist ... long touted as the only Filipino who exhibited at the New York Metropolitan Museum.\"<br /><br /> His Massacre in Manila features the artist’s shift from abstractions to didactic, political art. Gruesome and grisly is this work for he had depicted a mass grave underneath a hastilycovered plot of land. It was said that Igarta usually fears the openings of his exhibitions, unwilling to see people’s reactions to the color of his skin. He had left the Philippines during a tumultuous time – in between two occupations – to do backbreaking work in a foreign land and returned half a century later to see it on the brink of another political turmoil. With this particular piece, he grapples with the grim reality of his situation without holding back. A “master colorist” as Fil-Am critic Celia Aborro calls him, Igarta’s Massacre in Manila is dark and grim and its muted color scheme only drives the point home.
