He \nstarted as a cartoonist and is adept at layout \nand design, earning himself numerous awards \nand recognition in the field. It is in this regard \nthat Malang effectively utilizes every nook and \ncranny of his canvases.<br /><br /> \nMore often than not, his works are bursting \nwith color, creating a vibrant and lively depiction \nof the microcosm of Philippine life. Plants and \nwomen are almost always present in his images, \nlike this untitled 1992 vibrant-colored gouache \npainting. Throughout his career, Malang also \nexperimented with various techniques and \nmediums before coming up with his own, \nmaking a body of works using tempera, oil, \nacrylic, watercolor, and gouache. Malang’s \nproficiency in drawing is also seen in a few of \nhis surviving ink-on-paper pieces.<br /><br /> \nMalang’s ability to use any color in his works \nwithout hesitation is a testament to his mastery \nof colors, a characteristic that has solidified \nhis place in the Philippine art scene. Another \nquality of his works is that they don’t require \na lot of thinking and seeking for meaning; he \nmakes his paintings to be interpreted literally.
