As an early recipient of the Thirteen Artist Award, Parial was among the pioneers of folk religious imagery, exploring themes like mythical figures, local life, and native scenery.

Parial subscribed to the Filipino motto of maximalism but in this particular Mother and Child piece, he had left strangely blank, using only plain blue instead of his usual overflowing flora and native assortments creeping into the frame. As such, the viewer is focused on the titular mother and child; the young child sits contently on his mother’s lap, and in his hands are freshly harvested stalks of rice. High on the blue skies rests a bright yellow sun and the green grass shines from behind the pair. Even through a relatively simplistic piece, Parial’s Filipino tendencies shine through, a testament to the “native expression of unadulterated glee” that made Parial’s oeuvre a highly-sought after collection.
