As an early \nrecipient of the Thirteen Artist Award, Parial was among the \npioneers of folk religious imagery, exploring themes like mythical figures, \nlocal life, and native scenery.<br /><br />\nParial subscribed to the Filipino motto of maximalism but in this particular \nMother and Child piece, he had left strangely blank, using only plain blue \ninstead of his usual overflowing flora and native assortments creeping \ninto the frame. As such, the viewer is focused on the titular mother and \nchild; the young child sits contently on his mother’s lap, and in his hands \nare freshly harvested stalks of rice. High on the blue skies rests a bright \nyellow sun and the green grass shines from behind the pair. Even through \na relatively simplistic piece, Parial’s Filipino tendencies shine through, a \ntestament to the “native expression of unadulterated glee” that made \nParial’s oeuvre a highly-sought after collection.
