Brimming with tales of vices and virtues, his works teem with historical references and political prowess, a feat made even greater when he wraps these themes around the visage of a single person’s image.<br /><br /> His 2010 Bayani, for instance, portrays the national hero Jose Rizal, his image easily recognizable but with Garibay’s signature quick brush strokes and modernist color scheme. \"Jose Rizal was martyred not because he was a doctor but because he was an artist,” Garibay once said in a 2018 Manila Bulletin article, and in this very portrait he casts that idea onto the canvas itself. By challenging his viewers to see Rizal in a new light, he elevates his role not just as a hero but as an artist who dared fight back against colonialism.<br /><br /> In 2000 Sydney, however, casts that same level of emotion in a different direction. The woman in the portraits sits sideways and her melancholy is palpable. She sits slouched, her face carefully and purposefully blank but her gloom is evident in her hands as her fingers fitfully twirl the sheets beneath her. With nothing to analyze but this woman, the viewer is left to their own devices as they decipher this piece. Who is she, one might ask, and what is her story?<br /><br /> Garibay did not reserve his commentaries for his paintings. Indeed, as these pieces suggest, Garibay’s storytelling prowess bleeds even into his portraits, imbuing his works with nostalgic sentiments that invite its viewers to dig deeper into its lore.
