Brimming with tales of vices \nand virtues, his works teem with historical references and political \nprowess, a feat made even greater when he wraps these themes around \nthe visage of a single person’s image.<br /><br />\nHis 2010 Bayani, for instance, portrays the national hero Jose Rizal, his \nimage easily recognizable but with Garibay’s signature quick brush strokes \nand modernist color scheme. \"Jose Rizal was martyred not because he \nwas a doctor but because he was an artist,” Garibay once said in a 2018 \nManila Bulletin article, and in this very portrait he casts that idea onto \nthe canvas itself. By challenging his viewers to see Rizal in a new light, he \nelevates his role not just as a hero but as an artist who dared fight back \nagainst colonialism.<br /><br />\nIn 2000 Sydney, however, casts that same level of emotion in a different \ndirection. The woman in the portraits sits sideways and her melancholy is \npalpable. She sits slouched, her face carefully and purposefully blank but \nher gloom is evident in her hands as her fingers fitfully twirl the sheets \nbeneath her. With nothing to analyze but this woman, the viewer is left to \ntheir own devices as they decipher this piece. Who is she, one might ask, \nand what is her story?<br /><br />\nGaribay did not reserve his commentaries for his paintings. Indeed, as \nthese pieces suggest, Garibay’s storytelling prowess bleeds even into \nhis portraits, imbuing his works with nostalgic sentiments that invite its \nviewers to dig deeper into its lore.
