Depicting a \ncouple in the nude, Ventura injects a sense of dejection in this monochromatic \npiece, a hopelessness that permeates even the most vulnerable situations.<br /><br />\nAt the center of this piece is Ventura’s classical and technical knowledge of the human \nbody. “[The] basis of [Ventura’s] art is his mastery of the anatomy,” writes critic Alice \nGuillermo in Human Study and the Politics of Gender. “He has assumed the capability \nof distorting the human body, clothed or unclothed, or of morphing it in the most \nunexpected ways.” As such, Ups and Down, literally and figuratively, strip the human \ndown to their most vulnerable, exposing to the world the depths they would rather keep \nhidden.
