Creating a world within his canvas that reflects the real world with just enough magical realism to make its viewers do a double take, Cerda’s oeuvre sprinkles a touch of absurdism in an otherwise normal painting.<br /><br /> With his 2011 F is for Floccinaucinihilipilification, Cerda portrays a black-and-white picture of a TV host in a talk show. However, one cursory look tells us that this is no ordinary talk show. Over the head of the interviewer and her interviewee is a burst of brush strokes mimicking spurting blood or a leaking pipe. However, the most telling sign is the interviewee himself – unlike the posh, relaxed interviewer, this man was strapped down to a wooden chair, leather straps holding him tight across his chest, on his waist, and around his hands and feet. The only color in this monochromatic piece is the brush stroke over the man’s face, a dark blood red against black and white.<br /><br /> Floccinaucinihilipilification meant the act of doing something one considers worthless. In this piece, we can see that worthlessness in full display. The man was strapped down and paraded in front of a cheering crowd as though for clemency, and yet if we look deeper, this display of mercy is for naught. The only color on the piece suggests leniency is not given to this man, a macabre touch in an otherwise normal piece, a notable feature of a Cerda piece.
