A pioneer of meticulous Impressionism in Philippine\nlandscape art, Dela Rosa’s signature splashes or blots (which he\ncalls “wipings”) transform the recognizable image of his landscapes into\nworks of abstraction. As is with his Rizal Park works, his broad gestural\nbrush works transform the green foliage of the park into a harmonious\nview of colors and textures. Various shades of green are used to depict\nthe depths of the greenery, creating a unique perception of the scene and\nportraying a cool afternoon in one of the country’s most popular parks.<br /><br />On the other hand, his ink-on-paper sketches show the vision of Dela\nRosa at its most precise. As is shown in the collection offered, Dela Rosa's\nsketches utilize heavy and hard lines, the darkness of the ink a stark\ncontrast to the gestural strokes of his landscapes. It is an interesting look\nat Dela Rosa’s works and his skill in both styles.<br /><br />A pioneer of the Dimasalang Artists, Dela Rosa was also among the first\nbatch of the Thirteen Artist Awardees in 1972. With a creative vision\nthat is as unique as his, his oeuvre stands out with its varying stylistic\nchanges, and yet despite this, there is a sense of whimsy that ties his\nworks, whether they be abstract or representative art.
