Sponsored by the mother of his employer Ramon Salas and sent to study at the famed Escuela Superior de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado in Manila, Buenaventura later went on to establish the UP School of Fine Arts where he taught elementary drawing. Here he was known as a painter-mentor and he taught at UP until 1935.

His 1943 Landscape perfectly encapsulates Buenaventura's classical artistic background. He depicts the dirt road in an unknown rural town with such an accurate portrayal that the scene feels more like a picture than a portrait. The warm sunlight filters through the thick foliage, shining on the road in a steady stream of lines. With the amount of detail Buenaventura includes, Landscape truly feels life-like as though one could easily step into the frame and bask in the sun and dirt.

Buenaventura’s landscapes bestow a visual treat to its viewers. It transports them to the days of the past, making Buenaventura one of the country’s undisputed masters of classical realism.
