In this sculpture, dela Cruz utilized mixed metals in his work – the woman sits cross-legged with her shoulders slumped forward with rows of metal chains lying on her lap. She clutches in her hands a broken mirror with a rose and mask lying on her feet. Trapped figuratively and literally in her own bubble, the woman had nothing to do but look at herself through the cracked mirror, the cracks in the mirror exacerbating her perceived “brokenness.” But as dela Cruz aptly titles this piece, there is light within her, a beauty she does not seem to realize she possesses. The artist beautifully makes this interpretation literal as he wraps the bottom of the sculpture in lights, creating a “light from within” effect. Dela Cruz's There is Light Within is a reminder for us to turn our attention inward and realize that there is beauty emanating from every single one of us.
