Titled “Images of\nNation: Vicente Manansala as Social Realist,” the exhibition\nwas organized by the Friends of Manansala Foundation, Inc.

\nFruit Vendors display Manansala’s deeply ingrained proletarian\nsensibilities, harkening back to his childhood as a shoe-shine\nboy and a newspaper hawker selling copies of La Vanguardia\nand El Debate Independiente throughout pre-war Manila. At\nthe culmination of the war, Manansala sketched for American\nG.I.’s in exchange for little money, just enough to buy rice.

\nManansala surely knew the toiling of the masses, and this was\nreflected in his works, which evoked a social realist sensibility.\nBlack and white stresses the toiling of the masses under an\nexploitative status quo. They say working hard reaps rewards.\nBut how about the common people, persevering in their search\nfor better living yet deliberately being failed by a system that\nonly caters to a select few.

\nManansala’s use of a monochromatic palette all the more\ndelivers a solemn reverence to the often-neglected and takenfor-granted masses. In the same way that painting was breathing\nfor Manansala, the people are the most consequential movers\nof society and makers of history.

\nIt was this same empathetic sensibility that had drawn the\ncompassionate Dr. Jose San Gabriel into the painting.

\nVicente Manansala, an artist keenly aware of the Filipino\npainter’s social responsibility, would be posthumously declared\nNational Artist for the Visual Arts in 1981, four years after this\nwork.
