Ocampo painted Sonata in Green, he\nwas at the height of his \"Visual Melody Period.\"\nIn a May 1972 interview with Cid Reyes, Ocampo\ndescribed this period as \"approximating the properties of\nmusic…I approach my paintings now as if they were chamber\nmusic, which, I suppose, one can consider pure music.\"

\nThe Visual Melody Period is Ocampo at his most lyrical,\nmaking this period his most coveted by collectors—and\nindeed, his most revered.

\nIn Sonata in Green, Ocampo charmingly captures various\nshades of green—from deep, dark tones to airy and\nmore delicate hues. Ocampo paints a dynamic image of\ncaptivating musicality. Since a sonata means \"a piece\nplayed,\" one can even imagine through the diverging\nshades of greens Ocampo going through the tranquilizing\nlargos and adagios to the restrained andantinos and\nmoderatos before progressing high up towards the\nelectrifying allegros, coupled with the embellishments of\na coloratura passagework.

\nThrough Ocampo's rendering of organic forms, music and\npainting come alive, dancing in unbridled harmony. Music\nis weaved into painting, both art forms singing in unison to\nmold a visual expression of resonating, philharmonic depth.\nPerhaps it was Ocampo's visual articulation of a concerto\nthat had drawn the enchantress of a woman that was\nElvira Manahan—herself an elite force in Philippine show\nbusiness, and the dashing aficionado and patron of the arts\nthat was Dr. Constantino Manahan.

\nSonata in Green is one of Ocampo's most documented\nworks. It is a gem of a book piece, appearing in numerous\npublications, including Manuel Duldulao's landmark\nmonograph Contemporary Philippine Art, the June 1974\nissue of the CCP quarterly Pamana, and Nicanor Tiongson's\nArtista ng Bayan.

\nA year before the creation of Sonata in Green, Ocampo\nhad painted the iconic Genesis, which he dubbed \"the\nfull-flowering of his Visual Melody Period.\" Genesis would\nbe transformed into the monumental tapestry serving\nas the main stage curtain of the Cultural Center of the\nPhilippines' Main Theater (Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo).\nThe Genesis tapestry and the CCP edifice were inaugurated\nin September 1969.

\nThere is an interesting backstory that occurs after Ocampo's\nhigh-powered use of a green palette in 1969, particularly\nwith this work at hand. In his 9 October 1969 column in the\nTimes, critic Alfredo Roces writes that Ocampo worked on\na series of red and orange paintings \"some months ago\"\nbecause he could not find any supply of green oil paints\ndue to what Roces says is an effect of tightened dollar\nrestrictions thus, producing a shortage of art supplies,\nwhich are not produced locally.

\nR e t r o s p e c t i v e l y ,\nSonata in Green is part\nmusic appropriation\nand part reminder of\nOcampo's adaptability\nand versatility in both\nmedium and palette.\nThus, Sonata in Green\nwould form part of the\ngenesis of yet another\ntransitional period\nf o r O c a m p o — t h e\nexceptional colorist,\nin terms of his color\npalette, which critics\nand collectors alike had\nalways praised.
