Concepcion was a chameleon of a painter, having found the perfect balance between straddling his lyrical, tranquilizing abstraction and drawing-oriented figuration.

This self-portrait of Concepcion is a straightforward representation of him at 70. He is worn by physical age yet teeming with wisdom and experiences drawn from half a decade in the art scene and fostering the creative flowering of future artists.

The background is permeated by his trademark colors, making this piece a fine memento of both his legacy to the flowering of Philippine abstraction and his dexterity in figure drawing.

When Concepcion painted this self-portrait, almost a decade had already passed since his retirement as Dean of the University of the East College of Fine Arts, the institution where he honed the mind and molded the hands of future titans of Philippine abstraction, Augusto Albor and Lao Lianben.
