In\netymological terms, the word “amaryllis” comes from the\nGreek verb “amarýsso,” which means “[to] sparkle” or “[to]\nshine.”<br><br>\nIn terms of the color of the flower, a red amaryllis represents\n(as always) romantic love, while a pink one captures\nfriendship and platonic love. There are also connotations of\nchild-like innocence and naivety intertwined with the flower’s\ndelicate petals.<br><br>\nIn Marcel Antonio’s eponymous 2002 work, the artist uses\nthe amaryllis as a metaphor for both yearning and striving. In\nthis work, Antonio depicts a man seemingly wanting to court\nand woo a prospect from afar. He is holding a pink amaryllis\nflower, all the while exuding piercing gazes from squinting yet\nglimmering eyes. Is he waiting for the right time and the most\nappropriate of all moments to resolutely turn a pink amaryllis\ninto a red one, or in short, to metamorphose and elevate\nplatonic love into romantic love? Or is it the downhearted\nway around? Had he been rejected and left languishing\nin the throes of unrequited love and intimate affections,\nthe reason why his eyes send forth deep melancholia As\nalways, Marcel Antonio shows he is a master of open-ended,\ncliffhanger narratives.
