He\nsucceeded his uncle and famed painter Fabian de la Rosa\nwho had mentored the artist and his brother Pablo (himself\nan acclaimed painter in his own right) at the turn of the\ncentury. Through him, the then-young artist enjoyed one\nof the best art education possible with the accomplished\ngenre painter.

\nThe influence of de la Rosa is evident in Amorsolo’s 1957\nUnder the Mango Tree. While De la Rosa’s iconic “Planting\nRice” work (done in 1904, one year before the Amorsolos\nmoved in with their uncle) basked in the muted, dusky\natmosphere of the late afternoon, Amorsolo’s Under the\nMango Tree bathed in the famed Amorsolo sunlight.\nGone is the haze of the Philippine landscape; in its place\nis a lusher, more vibrant countryside, a reprieve from the\nrapidly modernizing 1950s Philippines.

\nAmorsolo returns again and again to the fields, depicting\nthe scene and its workers with the fervor of a man in love.\nGrowing up in Daet, Camarines Norte whose primary\nlivelihood is rice production, Amorsolo’s romanticism and\nnostalgia bleed into his works.

\n“The rural scenes that Papa painted were based from the\nactual day-to-day chores of the simple and poor people\nthat he observed as a young lad until his growing years,”\nwrites his daughter Sylvia Amorsolo Lazo in Amorsolo:\nLove and Passion.

\nUnder the Mango Tree depicts the simple provincial life. A\ngroup of farmers tills the land in the background, blurred\nand almost indistinguishable but what is more pertinent\nare the four figures in the foreground. A woman holds a\nchild to her lap, watching another girl – a teenager by the\nlooks of her – cook on a pot and a makeshift stove; an old\nman, perched on a deconstructed cart, watches over.

\nThe age-old nursery rhyme sung by children (\"Magtanim ay\n'di biro / Maghapong nakayuko / 'Di man lang makaupo /\n'Di man lang makatayo\") seems not to apply here – here,\nthe farmers toil under crystal clear skies and bright but\nnot blinding light. The Amorsolo sunlight – which has\ncaptivated the Philippine culturati for years to come –\nshines in all its brilliance, washing the common folk with\nan intense nostalgia, a staple of an Amorsolo landscape.

\nThe rice cycle pops up frequently in Amorsolo’s oeuvre.\nFarmers from sunrise to sundown occupy the forefront\nof his canvas as they work through the back-breaking\nlabor of the planting season. Despite this, his pastoral\nlandscapes show no trace of darkness – they are at their\ncore bright and lively, echoing what Mrs. Sylvia recalled\nher father saying: “There is always something beautiful in\nall things around us and nature. So why not recreate God’s\ncreation through [my] canvas?”

\nEven decades later, Amorsolo’s landscapes resonate even\nfurther; as modernization rapidly hurtles on, stories of the\ncarefree provincial afternoons draw in wistful wishes and\nlonging for the past. Under the Mango Tree showcases\npart of Amorsolo’s personal and national identity – it is an\nidyllic return to the past, a painter preserving the beauty\nof days yore.
