Perhaps the secret to this enigmatic\nyet stimulating amalgamation can be found in Alcuaz’s\nBarcelona home.

\n“I remember that every weekend, he [Alcuaz] would buy\na bunch of flowers to bring a touch of color to our home\nin Barcelona,” says Ute Aguilar, Alcuaz’s wife, in her\nannotations to her spouse’s biography written by Rod.\nParas-Perez. “There was always music in our home,” she\nfurther adds.

\nAlcuaz’s ingrained affinity for music (He loved classical\nmusic and was good at playing the cello. His father, Mariano\nAguilar, from whom he inherited the love for music, was\nalso a musical composer) can be discerned in this 1961\nwork from Alcuaz’s much-coveted “Barcelona Period.” The\npainting is composed of two subjects superimposed and\noverpainted on one another. The first depicts a quaint\nforest scene populated with lush trees and a pristine river.\nThe other shows an array of houses seemingly lining up a\ntranquil street in a suburban environment.

\nLike a music player casting diverse, harmonious tunes\nvividly expressing a wide array of emotions, Alcuaz\nseamlessly weaves the often-contradicting themes of the\npastoral and the urban/metropolitan into one painting\nthat captures the best of both worlds. Moreover, the\npainting possesses a mystifying layer that Alcuaz himself\ncould only explain.

\nThe work slowly reveals Alcuaz’s affinity for an abstraction\nthat veers away from the material and confidently\nembraces the lyrical, enigmatic, and surreal. This Barcelona\nPeriod painting captures Alcuaz at his most gratified and\nconsummate, an artist in his period of golden prosperity,\nboth in the personal and poetic sense.

\nAlcuaz made this work during his sixth year of settlement\nin Spain and fourth year in Barcelona, the sunny city that\nhe made his permanent homebase in mid-1957. In this\nsame year, Alcuaz was awarded the Diploma of Honor at\nthe International Exhibition of Art Libre in Paris.
