He had also divided his year\nbetween France and the Philippines, embarking on yearly trips\nto his home country to escape the cold Parisian winters.

\nHowever, home is a nebulous concept for Sanso. Born a\nCatalonian Spanish, the Sanso-Pedret family left their home\ncountry to settle in the Philippines in 1934 when he was four\nyears old. Physically light in a sea of dark-skinned, darkeyed, and dark-haired Filipinos, the Sansos stood out. The\nSpanish community in the Philippines was as different from\nthe family as the Filipinos – the Sansos were not Catholic,\nnot Castillian, and indeed not of the same political ideology\nas the Spanish in the country. Juvenal was reared as a true\nTagalog-speaking Pinoy but the otherness is stamped into\nhim from the get-go.

\nFurther muddying of the waters began when Sanso settled\npermanently in Paris in 1952. Now French in spirit and\nsensibilities, Sanso finds himself a mixture of different\nnationalistic inspirations. He was now both too European\nfor the Philippines and too Filipino for Europe. “The Filipino\nexperience is the strongest of them all,” Sanso told Leonidas\nV. Benesa and Ray Albano in an interview for his 25-year\nretrospective at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in\n1974. “Of course, being away from the Philippines makes\nmy paintings even more Filipino. I’m sure if I came back to\nthe Philippines then all the European things would come\nout.”

\nWriter and journalist Nick Joaquin agrees. “Sanso’s\nPhilippines is thus ambiguous,” he writes in the introduction\nof Sanso: Art Quest Between Two Worlds, “home and exile;\nintimate and outlandish.”

\nThis otherness that plagues Sanso is evident in his 1980\nImmutable Truth. Created just as he settled permanently\nin Manila, the flora depicted in the canvas are both\nunrecognizable and familiar. The twisting plants could easily\nbe found in the fishing districts of Cavite and Parañaque as\nthey could be on the shores of Brittany – two of the many\nplaces that Sanso found himself drawn to.

\nSanso’s isolation became the source of angst in many of his\nworks. And yet, here it became his strength in Immutable\nTruth. It is viewing the Philippines with Spanish eyes or\nseeing the shores of Manila on the Brittany coast. Sanso\nfinds snippets of home everywhere he goes or perhaps\neverywhere he went reminded him of home – either way,\nSanso’s Immutable Truth is an amalgamation of every city\nthat took him in, be it in the country or outside.

\n“His startling landscapes are the newfound land that\nMagellan saw, that Legazpi beheld, that Morga analyzed,”\nNick Joaquin continues. “So if [his fruits, flowers, fences,\nfishponds, and nipa huts] strike you as bizarre although\nobviously Philippine, bear in mind that those things are\nbeing viewed…by an eye looking back at them across four\ncenturies.” (Hannah Valiente)","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":1700000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":1700000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":0,"hammer_price":2042720,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":45562,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/93/122/lot/47.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":46,"next":48,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
