His pieces, while playful and whimsical, remain\ndeeply rooted in context rather than prioritizing pure form,\nemotion, or expression alone.

\nAcknowledging art as a potent analytical tool for\nunderstanding history and historicity, Culibrina also\nrecognizes the necessity for innovation and reinterpretation\nto foster a comprehensive and interconnected understanding\nof human experience.

\nThis 2016 piece by Culibrina titled Secrecy, Conspiracy, hails\nfrom the artist’s 2016 exhibit at Galerie Michael Janssen\nin Germany. The exhibition featured a sort of artistic\ndialogue between Culibrina and 19th century painter Felix\nResurrección Hidalgo through Culibirna’s own renditions of\nHidalgo’s iconic pieces. According to the exhibit’s curator\nRuel Caasi: “Culibrina selects key pieces from the works of\nResurrección Hidalgo and introduces interventions to further\nconnect his old paintings with the contemporary times.\nBuilding upon earlier projects of appropriating the works of\nrenowned masters, both local and foreign, Culibrina inserts\na wide gamut of icons and images that open up reflections\nand discussions on themes like flow of goods and cultural\ninfluences, globalization, and the dynamics of the art market\nand economy, to name but a few. Here, we see Resurrección\nHidalgo’s trademark Academic style deconstructed and\ntransformed into busier and more restless imagery filled with\nreferences to popular culture and current issues.

\nThe works in the exhibition particularly visualize social media\nobsession, pop and iconic objects, and details from the works\nof other masters, such as Vermeer and Fernando Amorsolo,\nanother key figure in Philippine art who was prolific during the\ncountry’s decades under American rule. These compositions\nare meant to trigger the audience to interrogate the category\nwe refer to as “master,” its implications and relevance at this\npoint in history with so many materials being appropriated\nand reworked, and with the past still haunting the present.”\n(Jed Daya)","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":1400000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":1400000,"userBid":7390,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":1682240,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":45572,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/93/122/lot/51.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":50,"next":52,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
