Swiftly rising to fame as the 1910s\nreached their advent, his works have been quintessentially\nFilipino, touting his beloved lavanderas, rice farmers, and\nhis ever-famous dalaga on his sunlit canvases. In the 1920s,\na decade brimming with nostalgia as the country faced\nrapid social, political, and economic changes, Amorsolo’s\nunabashed and unbridled longing for the past resonated\nwith the Filipinos even today.

\nAmorsolo was an artist \"on the crest of national nostalgia for\nthe Filipino pastoral lifestyle” as critic Alfredo Roces writes,\nand his 1928 Old Man overflows with just that. Amidst the\nbrisk modernization that the Americans brought with them\nas they set their colonial roots in the country, Old Man chose\nto revert its attention to the common masses. In particular,\nit zooms in on the elderly man on the field, a close-up of his\nface as he rests in the shade with a salakot hat on his head.\nThis wide-brimmed native hat had been synonymous with\nfarmers as they often used it as adequate protection under\nthe sweltering Philippine sun.

\nAmorsolo’s Old Man brings to the forefront the common\nFilipino and the hardships they face in the fields. The stifling\nheat of the afternoons meant they had to get up even before\nthe sun broke the horizon in the east; the constant barrage\nof storms meant a moment’s delay could spell bankruptcy\nfor the season. Indeed, as one childhood rhyme sings:\n“Magtanim ay hindi biro.”

\nAnd yet despite these\ntribulations, the work\nitself retains a tinge\nof optimism. “I do not\nintend to bring out any\nof those thoughts,”\nAmorsolo said in a\n1967 interview when\nasked about the rapidly\ndeteriorating state\nof the countryside. “I\ndo not want to paint\nanything that would\nbring out the ugly and\nthe painful.”

\nHerein lies the beauty of Amorsolo’s work. Through this piece,\nwhich was situated right in Amorsolo’s Golden Period of the\n1920s to the 1940s, the artist portrays the Filipino everyman\nwashed with unrestrained nostalgia despite the adversities.\nHis romanticism is at its peak and with it comes his optimism.\nAmorsolo does not shy away from the horrors of the world\nbut his conscious decision to portray the brighter things in\nlife is grounded not in naivete but in hope. He continued\nto portray a peaceful pastoral society with the loyalty of a\nbesotted man and in his eyes, as proven by the lot at hand,\nthe Filipino everyman is rooted in grit, perseverance, and\nresilience, characteristics Amorsolo holds in the highest\nesteem.
