Through brisk brush strokes that seems to blur out everything except from the fighting cocks, Sabong is almost a snapshot of the weekly legal fighting rings that our fathers and uncles spent the afternoon in. The cool gray background melts away, drawing the eye to the warm-toned roosters mid-fight and the gaggle of men watching them. The Philippines is exalted in the works of Cacnio, his oeuvre a chronicle of the Filipino heritage and culture. Here, he honors one of the country’s most popular sports. Cockfighting is a blood sport that operates legally in the Philippines and is one of the few countries that remains to do so, so rooted is the sport in its culture.
