With an oeuvre that art critic Alice Guillermo described as full of “sumptuous imagery…showing the rich confluence of cultures,” one will be delighted with the barrage of metaphors his works offer.

\nThe Filipino psyche creeps up in many of de Rivera’s canvases. An archipelagic country that spans 7,107 islands, the tribal culture of the north is vastly different from the Muslim moors of Mindanao, and his lack of heterogeneous culture elevates rather than hinders de Rivera’s works. For example, the 2016 work has several images of Filipinos throughout history superimposed on the background, reuniting the otherwise irreconcilable image of being Filipino. De Rivera also utilizes multiple artistic practices to create this mixed-media masterpiece, further emphasizing what “being Filipino” really means.

\n The question of what being a Filipino constitutes looms heavy on many artists and academics alike. Here, de Rivera takes on the lofty challenge, depicting the Filipinos as people who are bonded through years of shared history, collective memory, and unified identity, no matter how diverse they may be.
