To state that his works are solely surrealist would be disingenuous to the meticulously crafted technique and worlds he has created. His first distinct visual style developed in the early when he joined the Salingpusa group. This period was characterized by a technical mastery of linework and impeccably structured compositions. Meanwhile his more recent works explore structure and form through installation that utilize found and everyday objects. But Santos would also deviate and explore other styles and subjects. These two pieces which feature a sort of turn-of-the-century aesthetic are examples of his interest in Filipiniana and 19th century imagery; a subject matter that piqued his interest after going through his grandmother’s scrapbooks.

While initially cryptic or ambiguous, the allure of decoding and demystifying the underlying meaning or ethos of Santos's enchanting pieces is undeniable. In this specific artwork, Santos presents two figures inspired by colonial and turn-of-the-century photographs. Clad in traditional baro’t saya attire and posed in a manner both traditional and distinguished, these figures embody the textured narrative of history and the intricate relationship between East and West. From the former, a sense of jarring identity that finds itself enveloped both in local heritage and the vestiges of colonialism. From the latter, the distinct style of the photographic image.

The figures serve as a juxtaposition, representing our colonial heritage through the garments they wear and the cultural significance of portraiture, while also delving into the ancestral roots embedded within our physical and social identities. This amalgamation creates a delicate balance, blending visuality and textuality to explore their interconnectedness and apparent dichotomy. As a standalone narrative, the painting suggests a transcendental union, inviting viewers to engage in a deeper contemplation of its layers and meanings.
