He can also be an ambulant vendor of firewood, plying the urban streets of Binondo, Santa Cruz, Quiapo, and Calle San Sebastian, where well–off people live, those who can afford to buy firewood for cooking instead of cutting the deadwood in their backyards. The young farmer has a small woven “salakot” on his head, wears a blue long–sleeved camisa chino with the sleeves rolled up, a leather belt from where dangles his trusty “kampit” (all–purpose knife), and yellow trousers rolled up to the knee. He is barefoot. He is also the farmer type often depicted in watercolors by Damian Domingo, Justiniano Asuncion, and Jose Honorato Lozano.

The female “tipos del pais” is of a young woman, perhaps a farmer’s wife, also heading home after harvesting a big “buslo” basket full of fresh vegetables on her head and holding a sheaf of corn with her right hand. She can also be an ambulant vendor of vegetables and fruits, plying her fresh produce in the urban streets of Tondo, Binondo, Santa Cruz, Quiapo, Calle San Sebastian, where well–off people live, those who can afford to buy vegetables and fruits instead of planting and harvesting them in their backyards. The young farmer’s wife has her hair rolled up in a bun, and wears an early type of the country “balintawak” country ensemble for women --- an “alampay” (wrap/ scarf) over a sheer “camisa” with bell sleeves worn over an orange “falda” (skirt) overlaid with a “tapis” of horizontal blue & yellow stripes (overskirt). She is barefoot. She is also the farmer’s wife type often depicted in watercolors by Damian Domingo, Justiniano Asuncion, and Jose Honorato Lozano.

To show how fashionable “tipos del pais” paintings and sculptures were at the turn of the twentieth century, even for rich locals like the Molo Agustin Paterno family: There is a surviving photograph of Don Pedro Paterno at the legendary Santa Cruz residence in the early 1900s showing him at the far end of a “sala” (the famous Paterno “Sala de Diez Puertas”/Salon of the Ten Doors) with capiz windows and the famous lion–motif “Carlos Trece” chairs of the family with European balloonback ball chairs in its foreground. Superimposed on a sala entrance door is a riot of Filipino Art Nouveau, the famous and magnificent fully–gilded arch of “anahaw” palm leaves, banana leaves, and “areca”/betel nut trunks with nuts and roots commissioned from the famous sculptor Isabelo Tampinco y Lacandola. In the foreground is the “caida” (entrance hall/family room) furnished with taxidermied animals and a big number of interesting “tipos del pais” sculptures set on a “borne”/roundabout in the middle of the room.

“Tipos del pais” paintings and sculptures were the favored souvenirs of prosperous Spanish, French, German, British, and American businessmen returning to their respective countries from Filipinas during the 1800s. The ones by leading artists like Damian Domingo, Justiniano Asuncion, and Jose Honorato Lozano were of high–caliber and did not come cheap. Many of those paintings and sculptures were of high quality and recognized as such abroad, and thus were conserved and cherished by the businessmen’s descendants.

The partially derisive term “tipos del pais” (“types of the country”) referred to consistently charming interpretations of the natives of Filipinas during the 1800s, whether executed in painting or sculpture. The pioneering Filipino painter Damian Domingo y Gabor (o 1796 – + 1834) and his aristocratic protege Justiniano Asuncion y Molo (o 1816 – + 1901) painted exquisitely detailed aquarelle paintings of the subject. The artist Jose Honorato Lozano (o 1821 – + 1885) created fantastically detailed “letras y figuras” in watercolor (one’s name spelled out with people in various activities). Romualdo de Jesus (o 1848 – + 1921), Isabelo Tampinco y Lacandola (o 1850 – + 1933), and Graciano Nepomuceno (o 1881 – + 1974) were leading sculptors who produced amazingly lifelike sculptures of farmers, fishermen, vendors, cockfighters, etc.

The carving and painting of artistic “tipos del pais” statuettes mostly converged in Santa Cruz, Manila and in Paete, Laguna, both centers of beautiful sculpture in Filipinas. Santa Cruz was where the most talented, most rigorously–trained, most awarded, and most sought– after sculptors of the prestigious “Gremio de Escultores” worked and lived --- Romualdo de Jesus, Isabelo Tampinco y Lacandola, Manuel Flores, Crispulo Hocson, Ramon Martinez, Marcelo Nepomuceno, Graciano Nepomuceno; Paete was where many provincial but seasoned, expert carvers also worked and stayed --- Mariano Baldemor Madrinan, Faustino Caday, Inocencio Pagalanan, Mariano Dailo, Braulio Adao. In the early 1880s, Laguna Governor Don Francisco de Yriarte y Menendez, a Spanish gentleman of taste and style, inspired Paete craftsmen to elevate their productions and organized exhibitions there, in Manila, and other flourishing towns to expose them to a bigger clientele and a wider public. De Yriarte’s palatial “bahay–na–bato” residence in Santa Cruz, Laguna became a showcase of magnificent Paete woodworking skills. To this day, “tipos del pais” genre statuettes of high quality are produced by famous Paete sculptor Luisito Ac–Ac and his associates.

Despite several accounts to the contrary, many European and American expatriates actually enjoyed their sojourns in Las Islas Filipinas during the 1800s. Here, they enjoyed a style of living above and beyond what they had in their homelands --- productive yet unharried work, a substantial income, good investment opportunities, leisurely lifestyle, large house, big garden, numerous household staff, good food, good wine, horses, carriages, boats, international clubs, a busy and glamorous social life. Here in Las Islas Filipinas, they lived like gods. What more could they ask for?

When the time came for them to leave the land they enjoyed so much, they tried to take as much of Filipinas as they could --- antique furniture, “nipis” textiles (embroidered “pina,” “jusi,” “sinamay,” “pinukpok,” etc), antique gold and diamond jewelry, Oriental porcelains, etc, but none could evoke happier and more entertaining memories than the “tipos del pais” paintings and sculpture they had brought back home.","lot_group":"OBJET D' ARTS","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":700000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":700000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":841120,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":45422,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/93/122/lot/94.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":93,"next":95,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
