It was the inaugural edition of the would-be biennial awards\ntradition, conceived by Roberto Chabet, the first curator of the CCP\nMuseum of Fine Arts Gallery. Along with Antonio were other inaugural\nawardees, including Bencab, Eduardo Castrillo, and Jaime de Guzman.

\nMananahi also comes from the same year when Antonio won the two\ntop prizes at the 23rd Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) Annual\nCompetition and Exhibition on December 2, 1970: First Prize for “Oracion”\nand a Special Award for “Procession.” Antonio’s win in the said iteration\nof the AAP Annual marked a high point in his then-burgeoning career,\nseven years after he first won an AAP award at the 1963 Semi-Annual:\n2nd Prize for “Deposition.”

\n\nAntonio had also been teaching at the then-University of Santo Tomas\nCollege of Architecture and Fine Arts (CAFA), where he received his\nBachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1963.

\nThe work at hand is dominated by a washed-out shade of acid yellow, a\ncolor that characterized Antonio’s progression from the black-and-white\nseries of works he made at the very beginning of his painting career. While\nAntonio employs explicit distortion of his subjects, the artist’s use of a\nmuted palette seamlessly blends the human figures into their environment,\nbringing out an inherent atmosphere that exudes satisfaction and delight\nin one’s livelihood and the inner fulfillment it delivers not only to one’s\nsustenance and survival but to their self-actualization as well; Man is and\nshould not be alienable to his labor.
