Concepcion, this 1960 piece takes\ninspiration from Botong Francisco’s 1956 mural “Pageant of\nCommerce.” Here, Inang Bayan, dressed in a white terno, is\ndepicted as an enlightened maiden guiding and leading the Filipinos on\nthe road towards a progress that is rooted in solidarity and their collective\nunderstanding of their struggles and aspirations. The natives are seen\nengaging in different trades: farming, fishing, and mining. Behind Inang\nBayan is an imposing mechanical wheel, a representation of progress. The\ncomposition’s background is painted using a dreamy palette and depicts\nvarious industries and sceneries, including shipping (an allusion to the\nPhilippines’ historically rich maritime industry) and the iconic rice terraces\nof the Cordillera Region.<br /><br />\nPerhaps Concepcion projects his hopes for that elusive yet fulfilling\npath towards national industrialization and genuine development while\nretaining a strong connection to one’s culture and history (also note\nthe figures’ traditional clothing), thus fostering both a strong sense of\nnational identity and inclusive advancement for the Filipino masses.<br /><br />\nConcepcion painted this work a year before his debut solo exhibition at\nthe storied Philippine Art Gallery, which took place from March 4 to 10,\n1961.
