Working as a\nracing steward and later judge of the San Lazaro race tracks,\nOnib developed his empathy for the masses, soaking in the hope and\ndesperation of the masses as they placed their bets. His oeuvre is a\nvisceral portrayal of despair, his figures distorted in a way that implies\nOnib’s intimate and profound understanding of the human psyche.

he lots at hand (which were created during the period that Onib’s\nwife Bettina described as the artist’s creative apex) embody the height\nof his career. In particular, his depiction of the figures in the untitled\n1991 work weaves a complicated narrative that draws its viewers’

attention. What are the stories of the figures on the canvas? They are\nclad in formal clothes – are they in a highbrow party? The figures are\ndrawn with the Onib-typical distortion, and the viewers are left to ponder\nupon their expressions. Is it sorrow, anguish, melancholia, or perhaps it is\nsomething else?

Through his distinct usage of dark colors, masterful knowledge of the\nhuman figure, and compact composition, Onib explores the Filipino spirit\nwhich boasts of both turmoil and resilience. He presents the pervasive\nstruggle of Filipinos for survival under a skewed and unfair system. As one\npeers into the penetrating gaze of the figure, a deluge of questions floods\ninto mind, a specialty of Onib Olmedo.
