An artist-in-residence for countries like France, England, Russia,\nSpain, South Korea, Malaysia, and China, Baldemor’s works nevertheless\ncontinue to bear a distinctive Filipiniana style, most likely originating from\nhis hometown of the artistic Paete, Laguna.<br /><br />\nBaldemor’s signature simplified geometric forms are infused with a unique\nfolk characteristic, saturated with a cultural depth that resonates not only\nnationally but globally. One of the lots at hand, titled Simbang Gabi (1975),\nshowcases Baldemor’s proficiency at melding culture and art. Simbang\nGabi is a nine-day dawn service leading up to Christmas and Baldemor’s\nSimbang Gabi depicts all the customary aspects of the beloved tradition\n– there are food stalls for the early churchgoers and entertainment for\nthe children.
