Bencab’s decision to join the workforce came after he \ndropped out from the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts \nmonths before he would be able to earn his Fine Arts degree with a major \nin Illustration.

\nIn 1963, Bencab quit college and landed a job as an illustrator of the \nrevamped Liwayway Magazine, joining the new staff that included Ang \nKiukok and Alfredo Roces, among others. Bencab quit after three months, \nafter which he became a layout artist for the United States Information \nService (USIS) upon the invitation of his brother Salvador, who luckily had \na friend named Bes Nievera resigning from his position, which would soon \nbe filled up by Bencab. Bencab’s stint at the USIS was his first full-time job.

\nBencab’s time at the USIS would soon prove to be fortuitous. At that \npoint in his life, he met Virgilio “Pandy” Aviado and Marciano “Mars” \nGalang, with whom he would forge an enduring friendship made strong \nby the arts. (Aviado and Galang would also be Bencab’s companions in \na three-man exhibition at the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) \nGallery at the UNESCO Building along Herran (now Pedro Gil) Street held \nfrom August 30 to September 14, 1965.)

\nAviado and Galang were instrumental in Bencab’s transition from \nillustration to painting. The trio would often go, as author Krip Yuson \nputs it in the book BENCAB, “on on-the-spot sketching and painting \nexcursions around Manila, mostly by the seawall off Luneta, rendering \nboats and ships on paper and canvas, or at the Binondo district with \nits network of esteros…to document the shantytowns that flanked both \nbanks.”

\nBencab likely made this oil on paper work—one of his earliest works \nand earliest ventures into oil painting—in one of their artistic leisure \ntrips along the Luneta, towards Roxas Boulevard (then a picturesque and \nromantic seaside strip), then to the refreshing panorama of Manila Bay in \nits immaculate heydays, populated by small fishing boats and seasoned \nfishers and several recreational bathers enjoying its pristine waters. The \nwork is noticeably conceived and painted en plein air due to its small \ndimensions. The work is a veritable window into Bencab’s humble artistic \nbeginnings, a prelude to his success with his Sabel paintings of the late \n1960s that would mark the very beginning of him cementing his stature \nand forming his legacy in Philippine art.
