His mastery of all kinds of materials\nincluding hardwood, metal, cement, marble, stone, and\nbrass, among others, makes him a versatile artist able to\ncreate masterpieces from almost any material, landing\nhim the lofty and well-deserved title of “Father of Modern\nPhilippine Sculpture.”<br /><br />Abueva’s works have been described as whimsical and\nfantastic and this is evident in his 1975 work To Control.\nA magnificent piece with eight sides, each face is labeled\naccordingly with each side containing carved-out figures\nand a phrase below it. The figures' compositions vary but they consist of the same subject matter – a man or\na woman and a child or three huddling near them. The\nviewer is transported into a story of epic proportions\nas they view the work from the first side to the eighth,\nwatching as uncertainty surrounds the family.<br /><br />There is a beauty in Abueva’s To Control, a vulnerability\nhe manages to etch into hardwood. Molave is one of\nthe hardest woods to manipulate, its noted longevity\ntranslating in a notoriously difficult medium to sculpt from.\nHowever, Abueva’s dexterity shines through whatever\nmedium he uses, creating a tour de force that invites a\ndeeper introspection.
