The previous decades saw Sanso’s “Black \nPeriod,” where his oeuvre teems with twisted features \nand grotesque sceneries borne out of his harrowing \nexperiences during the Second World War as well as \nthe alienation he experienced growing up as a visible \nforeigner in the Philippines.

\nHowever, while working with his friend and mentor \nEdouard Georg, Georg told Sanso: “Why don’t you do \nme a flower instead of this head? I would like to see \nyou do a flower.” The suggestion couldn’t have come at \na better time – the 1960s and 1970s were a period of \ntravel for Sanso. He spent this time in Paris, Brittany, and \nthe Philippines where he encountered vastly different \nlandscapes. In the face of the constant and varying \nchanges in his environment, Sanso’s work slowly took on \na tinge of romanticism, shedding the overt pessimism of \nhis Black Period pieces.

\nUnreined Growth (ca 1970s) was created at this decisive \nperiod of Sanso’s career. Bright and lively, the artist \nportrayed the vibrancy of the flora he encountered \nalong his journeys. Perhaps it is the thriving plant life \nin Brittany or maybe a cluster of flora in the Philippines. \nWherever it may be, Sanso depicts the beauty of nature \nin verdant greens and light yellows, a refreshing take on \na commonplace theme.

\nSanso knows how to extract from nature a specific \nimage to evoke a powerful reaction. “He is … poignant \nwith rotting bushes and lichens,” writes Parisien-Liberé’s \nFrank Elgar. “When he interlaces leaves and flowers of \nimagination to form arborescent bouquets, impenetrable \nbushes, strange flora, like an obsession – all these are \nborn from a poet’s heart.”

\nIndeed, Juvenal Sanso is a poet of a painter, masterful \nin his craft and Unreined Growth is veritable proof of his \nlyricism and unique sentimentality.
