College of Fine Arts. One could almost hear them being called the ‘Tres Marias’, so few yet influential they would be.

‘Three Marys’ is a portrait in fact of woman power, encapsulated by the ageless scene at the foot of the Cross at Golgotha, where Mary Magdalene, Mary the Mother of God, and Mary the mother of James the Lesser, would be gathered. They were the female disciples of Our Lord Jesus, in the same way that the three women were the foremost female exponents of modernist Filipino art. The voluptuous pinks and reds remind the viewer of their femininity.

The ‘Three Marys’ are represented in various stages of\nemotion, not only pain and mourning but also exaltation\nand courage, hope and faith. One figure has her back\nturned looking to the future, the other has her face (free of\nall expression like the others) upturned in awe, while the\nthird is bowed down in solemn humility.

The trio are surrounded by a panoply of three crosses,\nfive to be exact, with the fifth cleverly suggested by heavy\nblack lines. It is as if Saguil wants to remind us that there\nwere with these three crosses were three different men\nwho lived three different lives — God the Son, and the\ngood thief and the bad on either side of them.

As the final modernist flourish, Saguil paints a background\nfor this parable that is not the forsaken mountain of Calvary\nbut the concrete canyons of the big city : A tiled floor, three\ncrosses that form large windows and a skyscraper with the\nsame mystical number of three windows down its side. It\nis the ultimate Neo-Realist landscape of mind and heart.\n(Lisa Guerrero Nakpil)","lot_group":"Painting","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":3200000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":3200000,"userBid":6037,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":3845120,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":47007,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/95/125/lot/72.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":71,"next":73,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
