Alcuaz belonged to the second generation of modernists after the Thirteen Moderns at a period of transition between the conservatives and the modernists. His works are highly regarded for his usage of light, color, and composition in a way that the NCAA described as “playful but never cluttered.”

In this 1982 untitled piece, Alcuaz shows off his exuberant side, utilizing broad brushstrokes, bright colors, and smooth textures that look as simple as it is captivating. He infuses a constant fluidity between the lines and the colors, his steady and refined brush strokes a fine demonstration of the artist’s mastery of his craft.

After obtaining his law degree at Ateneo de Manila in 1955, Alcuaz spent almost ten years in Spain, returning in 1964 and holding a one-man show that took Manila by storm.
