Born in Ilocos, Vitalis spent years in the United States and later in France, where he became accustomed to the Parisian art scene with a particularity to modernism. His predisposition to modernism led to his fascination and later mastery of post-impressionism. These markers are recognizable in Vitalis’s works.

These untitled Vitalis pieces shine on these modernist qualities. The short expressive brush strokes and the dynamic muted color scheme features the hallmark usage of vivid colors and impasto while distorting and emphasizing forms for effect. The entire canvas of these two pieces (one of them depicts a mother cradling her child to her bosom and another with five dancing women) is given equal level of care, a proof of the artist’s immense level of attention to detail.
