His oeuvre brings to the forefront the range of human emotions, evoking a harrowing atmosphere with his dark canvases and a visceral portrayal of despair. His abstraction of the human form is both a construction and a visualization of one’s psyche, the internal turmoil brought to the page.

In a pen and ink work entitled Guava with Seven Holes, Olmedo’s mastery of the distorted figure is evident. The subject matter is portrayed from bust up, his head misshapen and his features asymmetrical. The skewed figure emphasizes the slew of emotion that passes through the man's face – a mix of sorrow, surrender, and shock.

Even on canvases devoid of human figures, Olmedo’s desolation is clear as day. In Untitled (Native Kitchen), Olmedo utilizes sharp shadows and clear colors to depict a kettle over a fire. Despite the crowded canvas, his mastery with his technique transforms the common to the profound.
