He is the bringer of winter and therefore, he is winter deified. Often noted for his violent temper, Boreas was said to be invoked by the people of Athens when the city was about to be invaded by the Persian Empire under Xerxes the Great in 480 BCE. According to legend, Boreas sent powerful storms and raging winds that resulted in the violent destruction of the Persian fleet. The Ancient Greek historian Herodotus writes that the Athenians, attributing this overwhelming victory to Boreas, built a shrine in honor of him on the banks of the Ilissus River.

Jose Joya uses the enduring myth of Boreas in this 1987 work. The artist employs jarring colors and a chaotic assemblage of his trademark rice paper collage, which he began incorporating into his art in the early 1970s, to evoke Boreas’ harsh disposition and temperament. The cool blues, together with the pale whites, likely allude to the icy and biting winters brought by the north wind, signaling the lethal power that a formidable deity like Boreas holds.
