Born in the artistic town of Paete, Laguna, Baldemor spent years \nof his career abroad, having served as artist-in-residence in countries like \nFrance, England, Russia, Spain, South Korea, Malaysia, and China, among \nothers. However, his works continue to bear a distinctive Filipiniana style, \nwith the late art critic Leonidas V. Benesa stating: “No other Filipino artist \nhad explored the recesses of the folk consciousness as Baldemor has \ndone. Is there such a thing as Filipino identity? The works of Baldemor are \nan affirmative answer.” <br /><br />\nAs shown in this series of works, Baldemor pays homage to several \nFilipino iconographies. His interpretation of the Filipino mores in his pieces \nentitled Simbang Gabi, Simbahan, Pinata of May Festival, Philippine \nJeepney, and Harana are a testament to his brilliant manipulation of color \nand a recall to the lively culture he depicts in his works.  <br /><br />\nBaldemor’s signature simplified geometric forms infused with a folk \nart character is saturated with a cultural depth that resonates not only \nnationally but globally. His works, bursting at the seams with evocative \ncolors and genuine Filipino identity, have been chosen and replicated by \nno other than UNICEF as a design for their greeting cards, a bona fide \nproof of Baldemor’s artistry.
