A feminist artist herself, Velasco renders her women as both assertive yet graceful, a dichotomy she effortlessly achieves. They are, in her own words, “elongated, massive, heavily set, and invigorated with almost masculine assertiveness.”

In Pretty Woman, Velasco’s signature dramatic contours and vibrant colors are in full display. Yellows and greens often find their way in her canvas, and Pretty Woman provides ample amounts of it. The powerful curves in the woman's body denote a striking flow of motion. “You can really feel the movement of the body,” Velasco said. “It is not static.”

Aside from a celebration of femininity, Velasco’s paintings exude an inherent Filipina flair. Her canvases, a visual treat full of vibrant colors and elongated bodies, hold within them a treasure trove of Filipino elements. Her women are quintessential Filipinas: powerful and enduring.
