Simula depicts a man lovingly holding his guitar and seemingly composing a song. A piece of paper lies on top of a table, with a cup of coffee still yet to be consumed. In Kaibig-ibig, a man holding a cup imprinted with a heart of thorns is situated amidst a backdrop of string instruments typically associated with harana or serenade. In these two separate works, we see the intersection between love and passion—the former likely in the name of passion for things one wants to be fulfilled and the latter in contemplation of what more should be done in the name of reciprocity, the feeling of warmth and tenderness associated with loving and being loved. These works delve into questions about the elusiveness of ultimate happiness and satisfaction amid an ocean of pains and tribulations—an endless longing for a place where bliss burns bright.

Overall, Garibay’s works offer a multitude of questions—a story possessing no denouement in which more answers give birth to further inquiry and interrogation.
