He first began as a printmaker, where one of his lasting contributions was his introduction of handmade paper from indigenous materials, creating a product that is drastically different from the commonplace machine-cut paper.<br /><br />His seminal series Diaphanous cemented Olazo as a household name with art critic Alice Guillermo saying, “The Diaphanous and Permutation Series launched Filipino artist Romulo Olazo into an abstractionist whose name resonates not only in our country but also all over the world.”<br /><br />This 2010 series of works entitled Anthurium and Diaphanous brings\nto forefront Olazo’s hidden penchant for the dramatics. Bold bright\nswathes of colors stand in stark contrast to Olazo’s usual translucent\noeuvre. However, despite this, his trademark filmy gossamer brush\nstroke is still evident in the works. A plain vibrant background feature in\nall three pieces, pushing the subjects into the fore. Olazo’s exploration\nof color as an objective phenomenon translates well in these works\nas he uses a striking layering technique that is both powerful and\nevocative.
