He was born in 1600 in Abbeville and was educated by the Jesuits. He studied history, although his true passion was always geography, a subject in which he excelled so much that he caught the attention of Cardinal Richelieu, who asked him to be the king's tutor. King Louis XIII appointed him \"Ordinary Geographer to the King\". Under his protection he produced his most important cartographic works, among which the four atlases of the four continents stand out. Dr. Legarda had the very rare first edition of the volume corresponding to Asia.\nIn the texts accompanying the maps, Sanson mentions the sources from which his work draws: the geographers of\nclassical antiquity and the Bible, the Arab travelers, the accounts of the explorers Linschoten and Purchas, as well as the Dutch cartographers (Mercator and Hondius, among them). He also drew on Jesuit informants to design his maps of China and Japan.\nThe present volume includes maps of all of Asia, the Anatolian Peninsula and the Black Sea, the Anatolian Peninsula and Cyprus, Asia Minor, the Caucasus, the Arabian Peninsula, Persia (then part of the Turkish Empire), the Empire of the Great Mogul, India, Indochina and the Malay Peninsula, Kingdom of China, Greater Tartary, Japan, the Philippines, and Marianas, the Moluccas and Celebes Islands, the Sunda Islands (with Java, Sumatra and Borneo), and Ceylon and the Maldives. All these maps are of extraordinary beauty.\nAs for the map of the Philippines, itself an important chapter in the history of Philippine cartography, most of the names indicate that Sanson was based on Portuguese sources: Camarinha (Camarines) Manilha (Manila), Samballas (Zambales), Premeiro Surgidero (as the entrance to San Bernardino Strait) or San Joao (Siargao), although also Spanish sources (Calamianes, Cabo del Engaño, Moro Hermoso, Nueva Segovia, Marinduque, etc).","lot_group":"BOOKS","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":200000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":200000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":0,"hammer_price":240320,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":48376,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/97/128/lot/197.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[220000,240000,260000,280000,300000,320000,340000,360000,380000,400000,450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":196,"next":198,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
