Ocampo’s few figurative works. Although made during his “Transitional Period” of 1945 to 1963 (his excursion into non-objective painting), the piece falls on the vestiges of his “Proletarian Period,” in which images of humans bear no faces, representing the Filipino condition in the neocolonial context of the post-war period.

The piece shows two figures clad in native attire, with their faces void of any features. A man is seen refusing a “tagay” or shot of lambanog from a woman carrying a container filled with the popular coconut liquor. In a seemingly playful work, Ocampo presents an allegory on the blatant refusal of kowtowing to foreign slavery. The figures represent two kinds of Filipinos during the postwar era: the compradors who want to maintain close ties with the US, albeit remaining under the banner of its imperial subjugation, and those who firmly retain their patriotic standpoint of unadulterated sovereignty. De Jesus writes in H.R. Ocampo: “His [Ocampo’s] ripening nationalism surfaced during a newspaper debate, which he later carried on with a close friend, on the need for continuous and close ties with the United States. Nanding maintained that in the future, the Philippines should try to depend on herself alone and not on other countries whose motives were not always altruistic.”

With this interpretation, the facelessness of the figures alludes to two things: those who willingly gave their fate to their foreign masters, paying no heed to the latter’s oppression of their fellow countrymen, and those who have become aroused and enlightened, seeing with their own eyes—not through the eyes of the observer or intruder—the intoxicating and poisoning repercussion of subservience to imperial powers.

Thus, this important work provides a crucial insight into H.R. Ocampo’s patriotic sentiments.
