In the work at hand, the eminent artist-storyteller paints a story about grief and the seemingly inescapable labyrinth of freeing one’s self from the constraints and burdens of an agonizing past. Here, we see an image of a beautiful seated woman holding a cup of coffee in her left hand and a handkerchief in the other. Her elbow rests upon an intriguing piece of paper with unintelligible handwriting. Could it be from a past lover? An erstwhile friend? Or perhaps, a heart-rending letter written by a deceased loved one before their tragic demise?

We see interwoven expressions of anguish, regret, melancholia, bitterness, and isolation in the woman’s eyes. The somber background adds a layer of intensity to the overall composition. Garibay’s scribbling of the writings on the paper is a deliberate action intended to give the viewer their freedom in visual exegesis, giving the work a resonating universal appeal. As the viewer gazes longer at the woman’s pensive eyes that give off a penetrating stare, manifold thoughts transform into fragments of haunting emotions.
