From 1970 to 1971, the National Historical Commission granted de Guzman a scholarship grant to study mural painting in Mexico, a country with a long and colorful tradition of mural painting since the Olmecs, the earliest known Mesoamerican civilization.<br /><br />But while de Guzman is revered for his dark and somber expressionism of the 60s and 70s, which was a result of the sociopolitical turmoil of the period, his style mellowed into an idyllic period during the later part of his career, as seen in the work at hand titled Landscape. Here, the mystical Mount Banahaw rises prominently in the backdrop, seemingly safeguarding the immaculateness of its sacred domain. De Guzman’s period of calm in his art can be traced to the late 1970s when he and his wife, Anne, and their children moved to Candelaria, Quezon, the town at the foot of Mount Banahaw. The mellowing of de Guzman’s art further strengthened when the family settled in Sagada in the 1980s, and his travels to other places of solitude and serenity, such as Dumaguete and Apo Island in Negros Oriental, Siquijor, and Sorsogon in the 1990s.<br /><br /> De Guzman eventually returned to Candelaria, where he would permanently settle until his death in 2023. During his twilight years, de Guzman regularly painted idyllic subjects, signifying a man at peace with the world around him.<br /><br />De Guzman was among the first recipients of the inaugural edition of the CCP Thirteen Artists Award in 1970.
