As a Filipino artist who arrived in the art center of the world, Paris, in 1926, some of his oeuvres were able to capture the atmosphere of France antebellum. The war years accentuated the human interest in his works as he engaged in painting portraits. His townscapes were rendered in impressionist colors, exhibiting the brown tonalities of academic art. The flower painting, on the other hand, is the only Vitalis still life featured in this auction. Still Life is dated 1931, it was around the time when he lived in Montmartre, sharing an atelier with two other artists at 66 Rue Lepic, not far from where Van Gogh resided.

The canvases of Vitalis as well reveal a fine artist’s basic beaux-arts skills in figuration. The reason behind this is because he actually pursued painting at the Academie de Beaux-Arts de Montmartre, although he struggled while going through his “bohemian years.” Around 1935 to 1936, Vitalis met Camille Renault in Puteaux. The meeting between the two was fundamental in the life of the artist. He was offered by Renault to stay at his theater-restaurant at 60 Avenue de la Republique and assist with the set designs and decorations for various shows. Vitalis lived for a long time under the patron’s roof and cover in Puteaux.

Years later, in 1957, Vitalis settled in Plestin-les-Grèves. He created two large paintings in 1967 to decorate the walls of the commune’s municipal council room, and three others in 1975 for the retirement home. He is distinguished as an “honorary citizen” of the commune. Then in 1982, Vitalis received a visit from the Philippine ambassador to France. Later in his life, Vitalis received recognition for his contributions to the Modernist movement and the Philippine art community.
