He embarked on his artistic career in the late 1930s painting figures and landscapes. The 1940s was the decade he underwent a Filipino phase, working on monumental Mary figures using ethnic inspired costumes. In 1952, he Filipinized the Virgin Mary in his piece titled Ina ng Lahi. The untitled lot at hand dated 1963 is among the oil works of Dumlao that show his true talent, bearing in mind that he decided not to finish his studies at the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts.<br /><br /> The self-taught artist was a contemporary of Fernando Amorsolo and Vicente Manansala. He was a remarkable watercolorist, a master of the medium who is considered to be an equal, if not more than, of the late Manansala.<br /><br /> Furthermore, Dumlao was a specialist in the art of restoration. He has restored several Amorsolos, Hidalgos, and even a Juan Luna masterpiece.<br /><br /> In 1958, when Spain repatriated the Spoliarium, the shipping required the canvas to be rolled into three portions, with each piece going into its own crate. The historic painting thus needed relining and cleaning. The restorationist appointed for the repair was Dumlao, working on it from 1960 to 1961. He was chosen by Carlos da Silva, as head of the Juan Luna Centennial Commission.<br /><br /> Five years ago, Dumlao’s 4×7 feet copy of Luna’s Spoliarium was auctioned at León Gallery.<br /><br /> “All his life what he always did was to paint, sketch, draw, sculpt, and deal with his art patrons,” said his daughter, Marinela Dumlao-Currie, in an interview with Artes de las Filipinas.
