This unique blend of references allows him to capture the multifaceted nature of the Filipino identity, which is shaped by a complex intermingling of local traditions, colonial legacies, and the ever-evolving forces of globalization.

Within Ventura’s artworks, one can discern a nuanced exploration of the tensions that arise from this amalgamation of cultural influences. His compositions often juxtapose contrasting imagery, inviting viewers to reflect on the complexities of a nation situated at the crossroads of multiple cultural and historical narratives. By intertwining symbols, motifs, and visual references from different epochs and artistic movements, Ventura not only creates visually striking and thought-provoking pieces but also prompts deeper contemplation about the contemporary condition of the Philippines and its place within the global landscape.

The piece titled Mourning Cookies is well within the canon of Ventura’s conceptual practice. Here, he seemingly juxtaposes images often seen as macabre with the innocence that comes with a box of cookies. Here, one can read Ventura’s intention as bringing to light the inherent paradox of most things. In which life and death, joy and sadness, and even perhaps cookies and corpses are interlinked in some obscure yet essential way.
