Ino Manalo writes\nin The Life and Art of Botong Francisco: \"Botong often visited\nnearby towns to draw inspiration from their church art. To\nprepare for his own depiction of the Via Crucis, he immersed\nhimself in biblical texts and the Holy Week senakulo. He seemed\nto find it a deeply spiritual experience, remarking afterward that\nany sinner would have a change of heart after working on the\nStations of the Cross.\"

Botong imparts a solemn aura to his powerful rendition of\nChrist's crucifixion. Here, the image of Christ evokes a palpable\nsense of arresting gesture that effectively shares with the viewer\nthe final moments of the crucified Man's earthly life. Saprid\ndepicts Christ in the Cristo Expirante (Expiring Christ) pose. His\nwork evokes the passage in the Gospel of John that writes, \"Jesus\nsaid, \"I thirst.\" There was a vessel filled with common wine. So,\nthey put a sponge soaked in wine on a sprig of hyssop and put\nit up to his mouth. When Jesus had taken the wine, he said, \"It is\nfinished.\" And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit.\" (John\n19: 28-30, New American Bible, Revised Edition).

Veering away from the typicality of his works, Botong's\ncomposition in this watercolor piece is spare, inducing the viewer\nto engross themselves in the singular figure of the Crucified\nChrist. A spectral depiction of the Paschal Candle is seen on the\nleft, symbolizing Christ's eventual triumph over death and the\nfulfillment of his promise of grace and eternal life. The candle\ngives credence to the ultimate sacrifice the Divine had enkindled\nto redeem humanity of its transgressions. It imbibes in Botong\na kind of divine validation in his art, one that gives adoration to\nhis Creator. (A.M.)","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Carlos V.
